About NEMF Tracking

The company originated in 1918 from a small trucking company that transported products for the National Biscuit Company and Fair Lawn Dairies. These businesses were located in Northern New Jersey. The trucking company was later acquired by Fairlawn, which was then bought by Bergen County, New Jersey-based Farmland Dairies. The carrier was renamed New England Motor Freight (NEMF) at the time of its acquisition.

In 1977, New Jersey trucking executive Myron “Mike” Shevell bought NEMF from Farmland. Chevelle began his trucking career in the 1950s as vice president of Apex Express Trucking Company and later led and managed Associated Transport, at one time the largest trucking company in the United States, starting Happened in 1974. Associated Transport went bankrupt in 1976 and later NEMF. Part of the Chevelle Group, headed by Chevelle.

At the time of its acquisition, NEMF was encountering substantial competition in the Northeast and had 55 trucks running from five terminals. But, in the decades after its acquisition and the deregulation of trucking in 1980, NEMF grew significantly, especially in comparison to other unionized carriers at the time. The company continued to serve the New York/New Jersey metropolitan areas but eventually expanded its reach to Chicago, Canada, and Puerto Rico. In 1986, the company bought Interstate Dress Carriers.
